Each cat would need at least two trainers on set at all time. They dismissed these experts, as we'll soon learn more about. Hedren originally wanted actor Jack Nicholson to play the lead role, but Marshall decided to play that part. The six months of production stretched into three years of shooting and eleven total years of production.

The lions would live in Marshall's homes and would eventually reach more than lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars and cougars. I referred to this film being cursed earlier. Instead of theory and conjecture, ala that Shudder show, let me give you facts: seventy people were injured during the making of this movie.

Marhsall's wounds got so bad that he got gangrene and nearly died, taking an entire year to recover. There was also a near Biblical series of calamoties, including a flood, a fire, a feline plague, destroyed equipment, Hedren breaking her leg after falling off an elephhant, John nearly being smothered by a lion and needing more than fifty stitches to his head and Melanie being attacked by a lion and needing facial reconstruction. Two years in, most of the investors had left.

Marshall would sell four houses to pay for the film, rebuild the sets and rehire a crew. Then, it went away for decades. This is a movie that destroyed lives and a marriage. A year after, Marshall and Hedren would split. His son John would tell Xfinity that, "Dad was crazy.

He was absolutely bat expletive crazy. He was worse than the whole family put together. He was actually quite dangerous. He was scalped by a lion and needed more than two hundred stitches. Of the film, he said, "The technical problems were gigantic. When you shoot with five cameras simultaneously, each has to be ingeniously disguised so they don't appear in the shots. This was my first Hollywood film.

And I'll never be the same again. He was adopted from Anton Lavey, the leader of the Church of Satan, who could no longer keep him in his small San Francisco apartment. He was perhaps the most dangerous of the lions, despite being raised in a domestic situation. He would attack assistant director Doron Kauper, which required four and a half hours of surgery to survive. Twenty of the crew walked out and would not come back. Man, I know way too much trivia about this film. That three of the animals had to be shot by sheriffs after they escaped during the flood.

And that was one of the other lions was named Christian and he'd live with the aforementioned Togar, which means smoke. It is less a narrative film when you know the story behind the movie. A mother Tippi Hedren and her children Melanie Griffith.. There occurs strange and humorous events when the wild flock invade at home and they go after the family , up and down stairs and from a floor to another.

This is a great family entertainment. It's a family film directed by Noel Marshall and starred by his then wife Tippi Hedren, also producer, and their true children. Since choice was made to use untrained animals and since for the most part they chose to do as they wished, it's only fair they share the writing and directing credits also starring as Robbie, Gary and Togar.

Tippi Hedren co-wrote the book 'Cats of Shambala' about the making of this movie. Noel Marshall who married Tippi Hedren acquired a big number of big cats , lions and others animals from zoos, circuses and animal control officers especially for the making of this films.

Furthermore , there appear uncredited secondaries as Will Hutchins and Zakes Moakae as two of the members of the committee. Being first Hollywood movie for director-cameraman Jan de Bont. Plus , touching songs written and sung by Robert Hawk. At the end the film tells various warnings , such as : Although some scenes appear to show animals being injured , they were never actually hurt. The lions that appeared to be killed are all back to playing with their friends but the animals that are being slaughtered in Africa are a reality and many species are near extinction.

These are thinking , feeling beings who need your help to survive. Something must be done and there is much you can do , as contribute to one of the many effective wildlife organizations. Show your disgust with anymore who buys or owns furs of ivory. If at all possible , plan a trip to an African country with a good conservation record. The preservation of Africa's precious wildlife heritage is the responsibility of the whole world.

Noel Marshall and Tippi Hedren certainly had a, uh, interesting relationship for a while there in the 70's and early 80's. I don't know what their marriage was like behind closed doors of course, but somehow it's a great gift to the Earth that they produced the film ROAR. Why this is can't be easily explained in a review, but I can try with this: it's about a family that lives with lions and tigers and some elephants and panthers too.

Or rather it's about a guy who LOVES these lions and tigers by the way, why tigers, shouldn't they be in India and, oh, nevermind and panthers and so on, and invites his wife to come live with him along with her and his kids. Nov 30, Chip Huyen rated it really liked it. I read this book whenever I'm stressed and want to escape real world. Beautiful photos. Beautiful stories. Jul 17, Sabien Bee rated it it was amazing. My mom gave me that Book when I was about ten years old and I completely loved it! And I still do! It's filled with amazing photographs and memorys of the young Tippi.

I still try to make people read it and used to take it to school really often when I was younger. It's impressive and breathtakingly brilliant. Tippi is one of a kind and I could not recommend this book more! Aug 29, Fra rated it really liked it. Si imparano anche diverse cose sugli animali africani di cui Tippi ci parla. Eccezionali le fotografie. Dec 11, Miriam rated it it was amazing.

Perfect book for your favorite little wild girl or boy. You'll probably end up jealous that you or your children didn't have a childhood like Tippi's! Advisory: A small amount of nudity she was a very little girl, and she lived in a part of Africa where people lived as they traditionally had for hundreds of years. Tippi shares her own very perceptive ideas and speculations about spirituality.

And she lived with wild animals, who could be gentle and loving but at times very dangerous! Die Bilder sind ebenfalls unglaublich beeindruckend!! Nov 20, Doan Trang rated it it was amazing. Emotions well captured! May 30, Cicely rated it really liked it.

A darling book about the life of a child of French heritage, who was born and raised in Namibia, Africa. Charming photographs of Tippi with her Bushmen friends, and animal friends. Dec 29, raptorsandprey rated it it was amazing. The book has had a huge influence on me and my love for animals that has coined my life ever since up to the point that I wanted to speak the language of animals myself. Although I love this book, I read it differently nowadays. The voice is definitely that of a child, although it seems a bit artificial and forced every now and then.

Mar 16, ChenChen rated it it was amazing. Dec 14, misha rated it it was amazing. Such a beautiful book, beautiful for readers of all ages. The photos are truly beautiful - I would love to read a follow up from her adult perspective.

Jul 15, Gail rated it it was amazing. A must read for animal lovers, an amazing book!!!!!!!!!!!! Jun 22, Catarina Henriques rated it it was amazing. Being friends with wild animals and a world without animal exploitation? A book to read over andd over again and being able to dream about the wildness of Africa. Jan 11, Tracy Boyd rated it really liked it. I didn't realize that it reads like a child's book.

But that doesn't change my rating. Wat en hoe kan ik het zeggen. Tippi raakt me.

Into Africa. Frans Lanting. Customers who bought this item also bought. Thea Feldman. Review Tippi: My Book of Africa, photography by Sylvie Robert and Alain Degre is an exquisite book of drop-dead photography that will literally have you exclaiming with mouth open, "I can't believe this is real!

She claims that she can communicate silently with each one. A white child, she was born in Namibia and grew up in Africa and is now 23 years old living in France. The photographs of her as a young child in Africa were taken by her parents who are French film-makers and still photographers and spent seven years in the Kalahari taking pictures of meerkats.

She does explain that the animals she is with were either in a park or a protected area, but they are still wild. The photography is exquisite You just MUST see this book to believe it. Tippi's parents, both photographers who worked in Africa for a period, took the opportunity to shoot photographs of her playing in the wilderness, with animals, and with natives.

Fast forward a couple of years, and Bowen's suddenly decided that he was interested in Africa. While the BBC series impressively shot and presented was fun for him, the Tippi's book was much more fascinating for him: for one thing, it was written by a 10 year old, and the photographs many of which were staged or set in reserves with tame animals more intimate.

So I've been asked to read the book over and over again for him. The book's voice seems very authentic. Life, philosophy, racism, and fear are all talked about from a ten year old's point of view and consciousness.

There would be wild sweeping pronouncements followed by "I don't know. But Bowen can't get enough of it and so I'm forced to read it over and over again. Because of the photographs, it's not an ideal bed-time read. You really should have good lighting to see the photos properly.

On the other hand, as an authentic voice and as exposure to your child as an example of, "Yes, you can write a book too. This is such a beautiful book! The photos are exquisite, While the book is perhaps geared towards children, Tippi was 15 when it was first published so it's not a cute-sy, talking down to kids, book of wild animals. It's a very interesting read for adults as well. She talks about racism, hunting, being able to talk to animals and what the life of a wild animal is really like.

It's not graphic, but it's honest. She talks about the tribes they lived with and their mysticism. My 8 year old niece is obsessed with animals, all animals. I think she'd rather be a cat than a human. Actually she'll probably just stare at the photos then build a Minecraft sanctuary for all the wild animals.

This book is so amazing! I saw a link to an article about this girl's childhood on Facebook, and decided to check it out. Her story is so beautiful and I can't even imagine having such a wonderful, fulfilling childhood. I thought the book was just going to be a child's picture book, but it was so much more. It had gorgeous photos of amazing wildlife and scenery, but also the most wonderful stories to accompany them. I absolutely don't regret the purchase, and if your're on the fence about it, just go for it, you won't be sorry.

It's something you'll enjoy reading in it's entirety, then just perusing the photos from time to time. I downloaded the Kindle version of this book based on a series of powerful images I received by e-mail. The book adds words to the images in the voice of young Tippi Degree, daughter of professional wildlife photographers.

Tippi was born in Nambia and due to a lack of playmates of the human sort, made friends with the wildlife that lived around her including a 5-ton elephant she called "brother. I was concerned that the images might be too small on my Kindle or possibly lack the resolution that I saw in the e-mail. I need not have worried. Each image is crystal clear and sharp even should I choose the expand them on my screen.

The book itself is fascinating and includes many images of Tippi as she grows up in Africa and interacts with her playmates who live in the jungle just beyond her own backyard! This one is a keeper! An amazing life of a human being - described in words and pictures. Tippi may very well be the luckiest person on the planet to be able to have lived in and explored her childhood home. Photographs are of stunning quality. What I like about the book is the quality of the paper as well.

Any good photo essay needs to printed on high quality stock like this. What is not to like about watching a small human play with wild animals confident that they won't have her for lunch. This is the real life equivalent to the Tarzan stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs without the vine swinging.

This is the real life equivalent to the Tarzan stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs without the vine swinging. What memories this young woman must have of such an exotic childhood experience.

I only imagined this life as a little girl. One person found this helpful. Tippi had the most magical childhood in Africa. We saw a video about Tippi and wanted to know more about her and her amazing parents.

Her friends were the animals, like Abu the elephant that she rode all the time - and Bushmen, who welcomed her into their world and taught her their ways. Tippi was wise beyond her years and could teach adults a lot about animals, conservation, and Africa. If you want an escape from the world and something to feed your soul, order this book and find the video online. I bought this book for a friend's 3 year old.

The pictures are awesome! I think it's great for any wild children or children you want to encourage to be a little more adventurous! In the actual text, Tippi does talk about racism and death, so a good starter book to talk about those things if your children can comprehend the text. Very unique story and awesome photos. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Tippi is so young yet she tells her story in such a matter of fact way.

This is her life or was, since she's now living and being educated in France and it is extraordinary. Of course, being a child, she accepts, the way all children do, that her early years were normal! I do have one reservation - though I am still glad I bought the book - and that is that the descriptions both on Amazon and elsewhere make it sound like she was forever consorting with completely wild animals when the truth is that they were mostly human-habituated already though one should never underestimate as Tippi herself points out.

We fret and smother our kids from the realities and dangers of life so much nowadays. Tippi is lucky to have had the opportunity to learn precious lessons from the risks that surrounded her. Every parent should buy this book and remember to let loose the parental strings from time to time. Or even better, take out the scissors and snip them Let the children free. They will grow up so much wiser. This book is one of the best books that I have come across, with the photography and the thoughts of Tippi as a child.

The start in life that her parents gave her will last all her days, and of great thoughts as she grows older. Tippi was born into a better world than millions of children can only dream about, and with her parents giving her such a lead on animal conservation. This is a book for all generations.

Many Thanks. Report abuse. Beautiful photos, simple descriptions for each photo. A perfect table book and can be read in one sitting. Amazing quality pictures throughout the whole book. Just what I was hoping for! All accompanied by short stories about each adventure.

Excellent value. She believes that she has the gift of talking to animals and that they are like brothers to her. Her world is filled with characters like Leon the Chameleon, Abu the elephant whom she calls 'my brother', and leopards, snakes, baboons, lions and ostriches ISBN Your tags:.
